Randall D. Marshall MD, Co-Director

Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
Director of Trauma Studies and Services
New York State Psychiatric Institute

Dr. Marshall is founder and Director of Trauma Studies and Services at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI), and Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Marshall graduated summa cum laude from Rice University in 1984 where he studied psychology, economics, and philosophy. He then studied English literature for a year at King’s College University of London before entering Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1985. He received residency training in psychiatry at NYSPI and Columbia University, and subsequently joined the faculty.

His academic interests have ranged widely across clinically relevant topics, including the study of both medication and psychotherapy treatment strategies. Recent work has focused on ways to improve the treatment of persons with 9/11-related PTSD, understanding the implications of 9/11 research for resilience-enhancement, diagnostic approaches to the trauma patient, and the biology of treatment response in Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

After the 9/11 attacks, he developed a number of programs to provide both treatment and educational programs to the New York community, including a two-year educational effort that trained over 1500 mental health professionals in evidence-based trauma treatment. He has authored more than 100 articles and chapters, lectured internationally on PTSD and on the consequences of 9/11, and been interviewed widely in the media as an expert on trauma and 9/11.
